Opportunities in agricultural value chain digitisation: Learnings from Côte d’Ivoire

Use of digital tools in the last mile of agricultural value chains allows agribusinesses to optimise procurement and business performance and promotes smallholder farmers’ financial inclusion, empowerment through transaction transparency and better agricultural practices. This document presents four case studies of last mile digitisation from Côte d’Ivoire, a country that derives 21 per cent of its GDP from agriculture.

The first two case studies are examples of digital financial services offered by financial institutions in partnership with Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) following bank-to-mobile money account (B2M) integration. The services target members of local agricultural cooperatives and address farmers’ need for credit. The latter two case studies are examples of digital tools that facilitate collection and analysis of last mile data by the agribusinesses.

The study highlights the opportunity of last mile digitisation for different stakeholder groups (farmers, agribusinesses, MNOs), identifies ownership models and outlines early learnings and key factors to consider when engaging in similar types of projects. This is the second in a series of three country-focused studies that highlight pathways to digitising the agricultural last mile. The third and last report on Ghana will be published in the first quarter of 2018.
